The Selkirk Royal & Ancient Burgh Ex-Standard Bearers emerged victorious in the annual battle for the Shawburn Cup at Ettrick Forest Bowling Club on Friday evening.
The traditional fixture against the Selkirk Merchant Company once again produced a keenly contested evening of bowls, with the Ex-Standard Bearers eventually running out winners by three rinks to one and 52 shots to 36 overall.
There was no shortage of friendly rivalry between the two organisations, although one of the four matches turned into something of a marathon.
While the other rinks had finished and thoughts were beginning to turn towards refreshments, the final contest continued – and continued.
By the time the last bowls were delivered, daylight had almost disappeared, with those watching wondering whether the match might require floodlights before a winner could finally be declared.
Eventually the final score was settled and victory confirmed for the Ex-Standard Bearers.
At the presentation, Master Andrew Anderson presented the Shawburn Cup to Royal Burgh Standard Bearers Chairman Ali Craig.
A delighted Craig admitted there had been a little more riding on the result than just local bragging rights.
He joked: “There was a bit of pressure on us tonight. I think if we’d lost this one my position as chairman might have been getting a bit difficult – a bit like the current Rangers manager!
“Thankfully the boys came through for me and I think my job is safe for another year.
“It’s always a great night between the two organisations and there’s plenty of friendly rivalry. It’s good to win the Shawburn Cup, but the most important thing is keeping these old Selkirk traditions going.”
Master Andrew Anderson congratulated the winners, while making it clear the Merchant Company would be looking for revenge when the sides meet again.
He said: “Congratulations to Ali and the Ex-Standard Bearers. It was a very enjoyable evening and played in great spirit.
“We’ll be looking to get the trophy back next time – and hopefully we can manage it before darkness falls!”
