Selkirk Football Club is set to celebrate one of the greatest achievements in its proud history with a special Sportsman’s Dinner on Friday, 16th October at 7pm, at Selkirk Rugby Club.
The evening will commemorate 50 years since Selkirk FC completed an incredible Grand Slam, lifting the East of Scotland League, Scottish Qualifying Cup, East of Scotland Qualifying Cup and King Cup.
The 1970s was undoubtedly a golden era for the club, with an astonishing 10 trophies arriving at Ettrick Park across five seasons between 1973 and 1978.
Following a difficult period which saw Selkirk drop into the amateur leagues in 1967, the club regained the confidence – and finances – to return to senior football in season 1971–72. What followed was an extraordinary period of success.
A major turning point came in 1973 with the release of Ian “Chalky” Whitehead from Berwick Rangers. Universally known as Chalky, Whitehead was snapped up by Selkirk and later that season became player-manager.
Whitehead would go on to become the architect of the most successful period in the club’s history, helping to create a team that would establish Selkirk as a major force in Scottish football.
The special anniversary dinner will feature a fantastic line-up of guest speakers, including three hugely respected names from Scottish sport:
Dave McPherson – former Rangers, Hearts and Scotland player.
George McNeill – legendary Scottish sprinter and one of the country’s great athletics figures.
John Rutherford – Selkirk, Scotland and British Lions rugby legend.
George Purves said the evening promises to be a fantastic occasion, providing an opportunity to look back on the good times and remember the great achievements of a remarkable Selkirk side.
