Barbian the Bearer for the Colonials

Selkirk Colonial Society are delighted to announce that they have appointed Brenton Andrew Barbian of North Carolina, USA to be their Standard Bearer for 2025. Brenton was the unanimous choice of theSociety members at their Annual General Meeting held on 13 March.Brenton and his wife Marta have two children, Andrew (10) and Theodore (8). After studying at theUniversity of South Florida, Brenton’s professional journey spans 18 years in the retail industry, wherehe currently serves as a retail manager at PUBLIX, a large American supermarket chain.
Brenton’s connection to Selkirk is through his marriage to Marta, whose mother, Moira Kuhn (Smail),was born and raised in Selkirk. Marta’s grandfather, David Smail, was the Weaver’s Standard Bearer in1949, and his flag was bussed by Beatrice Helen Grieve (Smail), Marta’s grandmother, who remains a Selkirk resident. Over the years, Brenton has made many trips to Selkirk with Marta, especially during the summers, where they’ve spent time with family. His love for Scotland goes beyond just Selkirk, though. Brenton’s interest in Scotland stretches from exploring its historic castles and the rugged Highlands to learning about its rich past. He’s also developed a genuine appreciation for Scottish whisky, enjoying visits to distilleries and the variety of flavours that come with each one.
Brenton’s wife Marta will buss the flag of the Society, seventy-six years after her grandmother bussedthe flag of the Weavers.
Both Brenton and Marta are very much looking forward to being the 2025 Colonial Standard Bearer and Lady Busser.
The Society offer both Brenton and Marta very best wishes for their big year and would be pleased to
learn of any returning ‘’exiles’’ or their descendants, or any visitors from overseas, who are attending
this year’s common riding. Please contact the Chairman, Ian Clapperton or Secretary, Elana Lawrie.
