Fantastic lights and colourful flower beds have been a feature of the town over the years.
But as a result of the recent cuts in funding to flowers beds in public spaces by Scottish Borders Council, two of the towns community groups are merging together. Selkirk Illuminations and Blooming Selkirk will now work together under the banner of “Brighter Selkirk”.
Councillor Caroline Cochrane added “Currently Selkirk Illuminations is responsible for Christmas Lighting and the annual switch on event, and Blooming Selkirk is responsible for the towns hanging baskets. The new Brighter Selkirk group have already been in contact with the various casting associations to help with funding for the various flower beds in the Market Place and High Street. They have also received the support of the Selkirk Scouting Association, Flodden 500 and Rotary Club taking ownership of various beds and planters within the town, as well as Selkirk High School and Community Shedders helping with the growing seedlings. “
There are also a number of planters available for sponsorship if any business, community group or individual would like to help support. Also anyone interested in helping out and joining the group and helping with planting, watering of hanging baskets etc please get in touch with Caroline Cochrane at Selkirk Post Office.
As they say, many hands make light work and everyone is welcome, so let’s make Selkirk Brighter.
