Annual Toll Sprint
Excitement gripped the Toll Brig on Friday night as the annual Toll Sprint burst into life following the return of the Selkirk contingent from the Annual Spurs Night Dinner in Galashiels.
In front of a lively gathering, the runners charged from the start in a fiercely contested dash up the Toll. Attendant Elliot Hastie produced a tremendous burst of speed to power clear of the field and claim a memorable victory.
Hot on his heels was Royal Burgh Standard Bearer Sam Coltherd, who pushed the winner all the way before settling for a hard-fought second place. The Hammerman Deacon Wheelans showed determination to secure third, while Fleshers Standard Bearer Lowrie turned in a strong performance to finish fourth.
As the race stretched out over the closing stages, the remaining competitors battled on gamely in a much more scattered field. Bringing up the rear were the Ex-Soldiers Standard Bearer Gary Allison together with attendants Reilly and Fairbairn, who nevertheless received a warm reception from the crowd for their efforts in completing the traditional sprint.
Speaking after his victory, Elliot Hastie said:
“It was some race and there was no shortage of competition coming up the road. Sam kept the pressure on the whole way, but thankfully I had enough left at the finish. It’s always a great laugh and a brilliant tradition to be part of“
