Hoggan Steps Down from Selkirk ‘A’ Team Role

Selkirk ‘A’ team manager Bryan Hoggan is to step down from his role at Philiphaugh after several years helping with the club’s second string.

Bryan has had a long association with Selkirk Rugby Club, both on and off the field. Following his playing career, then as Player Coach, he took over as ‘A’ team manager, a position he held until 2009.

After a spell away from the club, he returned as Past Players secretary and treasurer in 2016 with organising the annual Dinners for the Ex Players a feature of the season, before getting back involved with the rugby side in 2019.

Since then, Bryan has played an important part in the running of the 2s, helping with the team on match days as well as taking care of the many jobs behind the scenes during the week, including physio, linesman and reporter amongst the many duties required as ‘A’ team manager, along with the help of countless volunteers who ably assisted him.

’Without the help of the Selkirk past players, including Cameron Cochrane, Lindsay Carrick and the likes, the job would have been a lot harder. But many hands make light work, and I was fortunate to get support from those around the town who love the club’

With a strong coaching set-up now in place, Bryan feels the time is right to step aside.

“I felt it was time to step down,” he said. “We have a great coaching set-up and with Josh Mackay and Bruce Anderson both looking to help out, it was the right time.”

The ‘A’ coaching set-up at Philiphaugh has also been strengthened with Ewan MacDougall and David Cassidy coming in to assist 2s head coach Robert Cook.

The additions provide further experience and support around the squad as Selkirk ‘A’ prepare for the new season, with Robert continuing to lead the coaching team in the new League.

Bryan’s decision brings to an end another spell of involvement with the ‘A’ team, but his contribution to Selkirk Rugby over the years has been considerable.

With the coaching and management structure now taking shape, the ‘A’ team will head into the new season with a fresh look, while Bryan can look back with satisfaction on another lengthy spell of service at Philiphaugh.
